Chiefs, Broncos Settle For 1-1 Tie

The Spokane Chiefs did something nobody has managed in the Western Hockey League season Saturday night. They are the first team to pick up a point on the Swift Current Broncos when the Broncos led after two periods.

Ty Jones scored the Chiefs’ goal and should have had a game-winner in the third period of a 1-1 tie before 8,061 in the Arena.

Denied a Jones goal that replays showed was incorrectly waived off by referee Lowell Dick, the Chiefs came back from a 1-0 deficit after two periods to nearly pull off the upset.

The Broncos (23-9-3) got a second period gift, 16-year-old Toni Bader’s first WHL goal, a 72-foot shot from outside the blue line that butterflied up and off goaltender Aren Miller’s glove.

The freak goal stood up for 18:04, until Jones got the equalizer early in the third period. Trent Whitfield played the puck to Jones in front of the net with the Chiefs on the power play. The puck sailed through Jones’ skates, then he re-directed it inside the near post for his 17th goal.

The Chiefs host Seattle tonight at 6 in their last home date until Jan. 2. , DataTimes
