Wheatless Winner

Bread does not live by wheat alone.

The Bread Shop in Coeur d’Alene hand-makes healthy, honey-sweetened, preservative-free loaves using such alternative grains as spelt (actually a primitive form of wheat) and brown rice flour.

You’ll also find wheat breads with more familiar wrinkles like rye, oat bran and cornmeal (not to mention raisins and cinnamon).

Price: About $2.50-$4 for a 1-pound loaf.

Available: In Spokane at Lorien, Pilgrim’s Nutrition, Total Health Center and Mother’s Cupboard; at Tidyman’s supermarkets in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls and Rosauers stores in Spokane (North Division only) and Coeur d’Alene; and at The Bread Shop, 1522 Northwest Blvd., Coeur d’Alene.
