Buy, Store Frozen Foods Properly

Staff writer

Some tips for buying and storing frozen foods, courtesy of U.S. Cold Storage:

Make the frozen food department your last stop in the supermarket, and pack all frozen foods together to help maintain their temperature.

Place foods in the freezer as soon as you get home. Mark them with the date you bought them, and use older products first.

Keep your freezer temperature at zero degrees. To check, leave a refrigerator/freezer thermometer in the storage compartment overnight.

In case of power failure, foods that are partially thawed but still have some ice crystals can usually be refrozen; however, fish, meats and other foods in cream sauces, frozen dinners, and cream cakes or pies are best used immediately or discarded.
