Dente Delight
In Italy, “al dente” means “to the tooth” the way you’re supposed to cook pasta so that it’s still slightly chewy.
In Spokane, Al Dente means the meatless sauce that Italian native Tullia Barbanti, a Sacajawea Middle School teacher, makes from an old family recipe. (She also has a cookbook by the same name, available at Auntie’s, Cassano Grocery and Hastings on Wellesley.)
The sweet, smooth sauce is bound to be a hit at your house, from the tooth to the tongue to the tummy.
Price: $2.50 to $3.15 for a 16-ounce jar.
Available: Most area supermarkets (except Safeway), Harry O’s Fresh Market, Egger Meats and Cassano Grocery.
