Would you believe… “Superbaby”?

That may be the next plotline pursued by the writers of “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” as series star Teri Hatcher has revealed that she is pregnant.

Hatcher and husband Jon Tenney, also an actor, are expecting a child in the fall.

One report has the show’s producers hurrying to film episodes before Hatcher’s condition begins to show. There’s been no word yet as to how - or even whether - the producers are going to incorporate Hatcher’s pregnancy in the series.

ABC has tentatively renewed the show, which has done poorly in its new Saturday night slot.

Given the ratings problems, a half-super wonderchild might just be the program’s answer. Imagine: Look, on the floor, it’s a slug, it’s a Tickle Me Elmo, no, it’s SuperRugRat! Loose talk

NBC’s Chicago affiliate, WMAQ-TV, is feeling the effects of its decision to hire talk-show host Jerry Springer. First anchor Carol Marin quit, and now two Catholic priests, Andrew Greeley and Don Senior, have refused to work as commentators. “We admire the professional news people at Channel 5 (WMAQ), but the decision of management that forced the resignation of Carol Marin shows a lack of respect for the people of Chicago and we will not condone it by our presence,” the priests said in a statement.

No, just the good folks of Chicago and vicinity

And now this from Jerry Springer himself (see above): “An anchor and some reporters at the station, perhaps - perhaps, I say - don’t like me coming in there. But don’t make it seem like the American public went crazy and started grabbing their children off the streets.”

What does a superhuman alien do when he freaks out?

Speaking of Superman (see item to left), Nicolas Cage is preparing himself to play the lead in Tim Burton’s proposed remake of the Man of Steel saga. Cage, an Oscar winner (“Leaving Las Vegas”) known for his offbeat performances, sees Superman as “a freak, but a beautiful freak in that he really cares about people.”

Now he just has to avoid all those icebergs - aka, the critics

“Titanic” director James Cameron says that he will waive his producing and directing fees, as well as any personal profits, to help alleviate the film’s financial impact on 20th Century Fox. “I was not asked to do this, but decided unilaterally to do it, as a demonstration that I take responsibility for my films when the chips are down, just as I take credit when they do well,” Cameron said in a letter published Monday in the Los Angeles Times. “Titanic,” which is tentatively set to open July 2, is being called the most expensive film ever made at $200 million-plus.
