Tibetan Monks Perform Tonight

The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour, featuring monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery performing sacred music and dance, stops in Spokane tonight.

The nine singers, all Buddhist lamas from Tibet, will perform in traditional costumes. The performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Spokane Falls Community College Music Auditorium.

The monks are known for being able to simultaneously intone three notes of a chord, called multiphonic or overtone singing.

This rare skill requires many years of training.

The Drepung Loseling Monastery was established near Lhasa, Tibet, in 1416. After the Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet in 1959, the surviving monks relocated to Karnataka state in India.

One of the goals of the monks’ tour is to generate a greater awareness of endangered Tibetan civilization, as well as to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India and to contribute to peace movements.

Tickets for the performance are $15, available at G&B Select-a-Seat outlets, or call (800) 325-SEAT.
