Penguins Honor Mario
Mario Lemieux said goodbye to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
Lemieux, who didn’t just popularize hockey in Pittsburgh but saved it, had his No. 66 jersey retired in an emotional 30-minute ceremony.
Lemieux, the sixth-leading scorer in NHL history, retired last spring after winning six scoring titles and leading what once was the league’s worst franchise to two Stanley Cup championships.
Ray Bourque, beaten by Lemieux for his first NHL goal in 1984, spoiled Lemieux’s retirement party by scoring the tying goal as the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins tied 3-3.
Hull settles issue
The St. Louis Blues’ Brett Hull said he has declared peace with USA Hockey.
Hull wound up in a fresh controversy this week when he was quoted as saying that U.S. hockey stars would boycott the Olympics if unsigned New Jersey Devils forward Bill Guerin was not included on the roster.
Hull said he was misqouted by the Star and dismissed talk of a boycott.
