Weekend In Review

A look at last weekend’s Washington high school football playoff games, courtesy of Newberry’s Prep Football Report.

4A playoffs: So maybe it isn’t the coach. Just kidding, Ed. South Kitsap makes the semifinals without long-time coach Ed Fisher, who is the new activities coordinator at North Central. The Wolves thumped Bethel 55-9 with 488 yards of offense and five takeaways on defense. They face Cascade (Everett), a team they beat 17-6 in the season opener. Cascade used two fourth-quarter TDs to eliminate Kentridge 28-14.

3A playoffs: Does Moses Lake’s success make smaller GSL schools think about dropping down? The Chieftans, in the playoffs for the first time, stunned Prosser 27-20, despite the Mustangs getting 422 yards of offense. ML controlled the clock in the second half, giving Prosser three possessions. The Chieftans face Lakes, which rallied in the fourth quarter to dump Issaquah 20-9. Lakes QB Travis Kirby passed for 315 yards and two TDs to help the Lancers overcome a 9-7 deficit entering the fourth quarter… . Newport (Bellevue) dropped top-ranked O’Dea 27-18 as wishbone QB Dave Skordal rushed for 115 yards and three TDs, including TD runs of 68 and 18 yards in the third quarter. Newport didn’t throw a pass… . Ferndale eliminated defending champion Capital 24-7 as Matthias Wilson ran for 256 yards.

2A playoffs: Eatonville’s Tyler Krambrink blocked two punts, the second one coming with 1 second remaining, setting up Jody Jasmer’s game-winning 32-yard field goal in a 17-14 win over Meridian… . Elma scored on Ben Dougherty’s 81-yard TD pass on the first play and went on to a 19-0 lead before holding off Rochester 19-14.

1A playoffs: Vince Kucera had his eighth interception and the fourth he returned for a TD as Concrete topped Adna 27-6. … Lynden Christian beat Tacoma Baptist 28-13 as Greg Dykstra ran for 93 yards and three TDs and passed for 100 yards.

B-11 playoffs: Dennis McLaughlin rushed for 211 yards and two second-half touchdowns as Darrington topped Wahkiakum 20-7… . Mossyrock ended Chief Leschi’s dream run in its first year of fielding a football team with a 61-12 romp.

B-8 playoffs: Neah Bay quarterback Robin Butterfield threw for 300 yards in two regular season wins over Clallam Bay but in the playoffs, the Bruins held him to 47 yards in a 28-6 win. Josh Pilatti, in his first game back from a two-game suspension, scored all four Clallam TDs… . Taholah scored three times in a 2-minute span in the second quarter, recovering two onside kicks, as the Chitwhins whipped Wishkah Valley 68-0.
