Fish Hatchery Needs Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help the Idaho Department of Fish and Game collect eggs for the kokanee hatchery program on Lake Pend Oreille.
Around the beginning of November, kokanee salmon begin to show up at Granite Creek on the lake in preparation for spawning.
The eggs are collected for the Cabinet Gorge Hatchery.
A temporary weir and trap at Sullivan springs on Granite Creek captures kokanee heading up the stream to spawn. Eggs are collected from the captured fish and then fertilized and reared in the hatchery.
Two to five volunteers are needed to assist Fish and Game employees each day that eggs are taken.
Anyone interested in helping should call Rob Soumas at the regional office, 769-1414, or Brad Dredge at the Cabinet Gorge Hatchery, 266-1431. , DataTimes
