Enough Already With Bad Leaf
There’s fact, there’s fiction and there’s opinion. And the fact is, I’m the one doing the typing here.
- When Ryan Leaf was back in Pullman last month, I heard he didn’t come to a complete stop before making a right turn, too.
- If you’re a fan of Christmas specials, don’t miss “Holidays with the Moceanu Family,” which I think airs just after the next Jerry Springer Show. Or maybe during it. I forget which.
- Highlight of the college basketball season so far: Guard Brandon Pardon leaves the Wright State program because coach Ed Schilling has the team pray too much. Just when you thought players transfer only when the team doesn’t have a prayer.
- Only thing holding up the settlement in the Dennis Rodman-Carmen Electra annulment is the division of tattoos.
- Seeing that the Hampton University basketball coaches have hired Johnnie Cochran to pursue a wrongful arrest suit, I wonder: Why on earth would anyone want to own Lubbock, Texas?
- You can understand a crack referee like Phil Luckett getting confused on a coin flip, what with his own head and tail being in the same place.
- If I remember correctly, Washington coach Jim Lambright called Andre DeSaussure’s pre-Apple Cup popoff stupid or something to that effect. But Andre got himself out of a November trip to Pullman and still gets to go to Hawaii in December, and that pretty much makes his GPA score irrelevant.
- To paraphrase Claude Rains in “Casablanca,” I’m shocked - shocked - to learn that the International Olympic Committee has taken bribes. The next thing you’re going to tell me is that the President has been fooling around on Mrs. Clinton.
- I’d have to check with our county commissioners to be sure, but I think what Chiefs hockey player Daniel Bohac did with his stick the other night is still OK at the Deja Vu.
Unless it was Ryan Leaf doing it.
- You hear about the Cincinnati Bengals gassing their punter last week for saying he wouldn’t buy tickets to watch such a miserable team? The truth hurts, but I didn’t know it was supposed to hurt the guy telling it.
- When Bob Robertson advises at the end of his broadcasts, “Be a good sport, all ways,” does that mean when you get fired, too?
- OK, revile the spoiled NBA players. Bemoan the outrageous salaries in baseball. But no one other than a professional golfer could say, as Fred Couples did in referring to the $35 million increase in PGA pursues next year, “I honestly think we deserve it.”
- If it means canceling the NBA All-Star Game, then by all means let’s have a lockout every year.
- Bob Davie was right. If Lou Holtz is taking the South Carolina job, he must be senile.
- If you’re looking for a big-name coach to give your company a motivational speech, maybe you’d like to invite Northwestern’s Gary Barnett to explain how he went from being the hottest thing in college football to an apologist for point-shavers.
- There are still wild rumors out there that the Chargers are going to hire Mike Price away from Washington State to take advantage of the relationship he’s forged with their quarterback over the years. Funny, I didn’t know Mike had ever coached Craig Whelihan.
- I’m just assuming all those passionately loyal UW fans in Spokane - the ones who give us an earful every time the headline type isn’t large enough - were at a winetasting or shopping at Nordstrom the night their nationally ranked Huskies played Gonzaga at the Arena.
- In the same vein as jumbo shrimp and military intelligence, we now have Little League expansion.
- If Kevin Brown can get a contract for $105 million, then nobody can afford Chad Ogea, who beat Brown twice in the 1997 World Series. Indeed, what’s the going rate for a pitcher who has actually won a game in the Series?
- Kansas State officials and players are upset about being shunted to the cheapjack Alamo Bowl because they needed the $11 million payout of a BCS bowl to pay for coach Bill Snyder’s personality transplant.
- I know, I know - Peyton Manning is a prince and the franchise in Indianapolis, and Ryan Leaf is a punk and a flop in San Diego. But Tennessee went 12-0 without Manning this year, while Wazzu went 3-8 without Leaf. You tell me who should be honked about not winning the Heisman last year.
- I’m for impeachment, but I’d start with our Presidents Cup team.
