A judge set bond Tuesday at $100,000 for a 43-year-old Coeur d’Alene man accused of severely beating his wife.

Jeffrey S. Veenhuis is being held in the Kootenai County Jail on a charge of felony domestic battery. His 47-year-old wife, Helen, was listed in serious condition Tuesday.

Helen Veenhuis was taken to Kootenai Medical Center on Monday after suffering a seizure at work. She was unconscious when police arrived.

Police said she underwent surgery Monday to relieve pressure around her brain. She appeared to be coming out of a coma late Tuesday, police said.

Helen Veenhuis told co-workers at the Sunset Bar that she had been beaten by her husband on July 4 and 5, according to police reports. The bartender told police she noticed bruises on Helen Veenhuis’ arms and chest.

Jeffrey Veenhuis was arrested about 6:45 p.m. at the couple’s home.
