Grant Helps Wallace Fix Carnegie Library

From Staff Reports

A $5,000 grant from Foundation Northwest has boosted efforts to restore Wallace’s Carnegie Library.

That brings the total amount raised to $40,000. It will be enough to get started on the exterior renovation late this summer, according to project coordinator Joseph Grismer.

The first order of business will be to restore the brick, wood trim and cement foundation.

The roof is being studied to see if it needs repair. So far, the answer is “probably not,” Grismer said.

Interior work will follow.

The $100,000 project is expected to take three years to complete. Contributions can be sent to the Library foundation, 415 River St., Wallace, ID 83873. For more information, call 208-752-4571.

The 1911 structure is one of only four libraries in Idaho built with Carnegie Foundation funds that still serve their original purpose.

The city of Wallace, which owns the building, and the Wallace school district, are seeking a grant to build a handicapped entrance between the library and the high school.
