Don’T Eat Hog; Live High On It
It looks like you never really can be too rich or too thin.
There’s at least one adult on a low-fat diet in more than half (52.6 percent) of American households, according to a recent survey by Decision Analyst Inc.
And the more money you make, the more likely you are to be starving yourself, the survey shows. Only 49.8 percent of households with incomes under $30,000 reported a dieter, compared to 52.1 percent in the $30,000 to $50,000 range and 54.7 percent of those above $50,000.
Age also matters, with the percentage of dieters ranging from 44 percent in households headed by people 18-34 up to 59.7 percent among the 55-plus set.
And Westerners are particularly prone to be counting calories, with dieters in 55.2 percent of households, compared to 54.4 percent in the Northeast, 53.4 percent in the South and a mere 49 percent in the Midwest. (Where do you think the phrase “corn-fed” comes from?)
Wobegon winners
There wasn’t a Powdermilk Biscuit in sight, but the entries in KPBX-FM public radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion” potluck recipe contest ranged from Lime Jell-O Tuna Salad to St. Olaf’s All-Occasion Lutheran Hamburger Casserole to Plenty Good Enough For Minnesotans Cornbread.
When the crumbs had settled, four lucky competitors took home tickets to the evening “Prairie Home” performance June 27 at the Spokane Opera House: Eli Barrett, for Chicken Portobello Smoky Strata; Mary Jane O’Neill, The Lives of the Cowboys Cookies; Patty Driscoll, Orange Chocolate Scones, and Jane Lorenson, Hey Bob-a-Ree-Bob Rhubarb Pie.
We’ll try to print the winning recipes in a future edition of IN Food, space allowing.
