Panthers Keep Pace

Erinn Smith and Lindsay Murphy had five aces apiece on Tuesday as Mead served its way to a 15-6, 15-12, 15-11 Greater Spokane League volleyball win at Rogers.

The second-place Panthers (10-1), who remained 1-1/2 games behind Ferris, had three aces in the first game.

Fourth-place Rogers (7-5) led the second game 8-5 before it committed three consecutive service errors.

The final game was tied at 6. Mead finished the match with three more Rogers service errors.

Elsewhere in the league, Angela McAuley and Rheanna Arnold combined for 15 kills in the third game as University (5-7) jumped into sixth place with a 14-16, 15-12, 15-7, 15-13 home win over depleted Lewis and Clark (6-5).

McAuley and Jacquelin Floth combined for 34 digs for the Titans, and Crissa Poole served eight consecutive points in the third game.

Sophomore Chrystal Cochran, called up from junior varsity because eight LC players are serving two-week suspensions, served the final two points of the first game.

Michelle Etter had three of her seven aces in the first game and finished with 15 kills as third-place Shadle Park (8-3) defeated visiting Gonzaga Prep 15-0, 15-3, 15-2.

The Bullpups, 4-7, dropped behind U-Hi in the chase for the final district berth.

Casey Carlson had a career-high 15 kills, one more than teammate Julie Weatherred, as Ferris (12-0) defeated visiting North Central 15-11, 15-6, 15-6.

Joelene Bogle of the Saxons had 34 assists while filling in for setter Devon Herron, who was sick.

The Indians are 3-9.

Rebecca Triplett and Amanda Kline combined for five kills to complete the fourth game as two-time defending champion East Valley opened Frontier League play with a 15-8, 8-15, 15-12, 15-13 win at Clarkston.

The Knights trailed the final game 9-0 before rebounding.

West Valley closed out its opener with five consecutive points for a 15-0, 15-9, 15-12 win at Cheney.

Deer Park (2-6) roared to a 13-2 lead in the first game and scored the final four points of the fifth game for a 15-6, 13-15, 11-15, 15-6, 15-12 Great Northern League win over visiting Medical Lake (1-7).

Lakeside (6-2) closed within one-half game of idle Colville and Newport with a 15-1, 15-1, 15-6 victory over visiting Riverside (0-8).

GNL girls soccer

Amanda Plummer scored once and set up the other goals as Deer Park (1-6) defeated visiting Colville 3-1.

Colville (2-4-1) defeated DP 4-0 earlier in the season.

Mandy Cresswell’s crossing pass to Lacie Wilson for a short-range goal in the final minute allowed visiting Lakeside (3-3-1) to edge Chewelah 2-1. The Cougars are 1-6.

League-leading Riverside (7-0) switched to three forwards for its four-goal second half and defeated visiting Medical Lake 5-1.

The Rams’ Kelly Ostby broke a 1-all tie with a steal and goal against two defenders. Alison Biggs of the Cardinals (4-3) scored from 20 yards on a free kick, the first league goal against Riverside.

GNL cross country

Colville and Lakeside’s boys improved to 4-0 in anticipation of their Tuesday meet at Colville.

Colville’s Cory Rebmann topped the field by 10 seconds during wins over Riverside (2-2) and host Deer Park (0-3). Rebmann, well ahead of a pack of three for the final mile, ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 25 seconds.

The Rams’ Ian Hansen ran second. DP had no runners in the top five.

Perry Welch, 16:50 for three miles, won for the second straight week to lead Lakeside over Chewelah (1-3) and Medical Lake (1-2) at Nine Mile Falls.

The defending state champion Eagles had four runners in the top five. ML’s third-place Jeff Wendt broke up the pack.

Newport (2-1) edged Pullman (0-3) 27-28 on the 2.95-mile course at Freeman.

Colville’s girls (4-0) broke a first-place tie with Riverside (3-1) with a 25-32 win at DP (1-2). Crystal Evans (20:34) led three Colville runners in the top five. Riverside’s Nora Zaprzalka (20:26) pulled away from a pack of three.

Lisa Erikson (20:50) had her first league win to lead Lakeside (3-1) over visiting Chewelah (1-3) and Medical Lake (0-3).

Jean Gardner (20:46) and Sarah Bell (20:49) ran 1-2 to lead Newport (2-1) over Pullman (0-3) at Freeman.
