Coach: Dave Rounds
Top returners: Craig Zanetti, junior, sprints/long jump/relays; Zach Penney, jr., sprints/400/lj; Steve Jennings, senior, sprints/relays; Jake Sprute, sr., sprints/relays; Gian Ghigleri, sr., 110 hurdles/triple jump; Marty Pecor, sr., throws; Stephanie Lavigne, jr., hurdles/lj; Lindsay Carrico, jr., sprints/lj; Heather Gregory, jr., high jump; Amy McCluskey, jr., 800/300 hurdles.
Top newcomers: Jason Shaw, freshman, 800/hj; Andy Jones, sr., distances; Tony Caron, soph., sprints; Kathryn Reynolds, fr., sprints; Meghann Edmunds, fr., sprints; Katie Branstetter, fr., sprints; Ronikae Clark, fr., sprints; Ashley Heinig, fr., sprints; Nicole Erickson, soph., 400/800; Jazmin Crum, soph., sprints.
Outlook: It’s the most promising year for both the boys and girls in some time. The Miners’ 800 relay team of Zanetti, Penney, Sprute and Jennings could challenge for a state medal. Rounds was impressed with his boys’ third-place finish Saturday at the Icebreaker Invitational. The Miners took just seven boys to the meet.
Lakeside Knights
Coach: Brad Veile
Turnout: James Miller, soph., distances; Daniel Costa, jr., sprints/lj; Lan Jin, jr., middle distances.
Outlook: Track is the lone spring sport offered at Lakeside this year after no teams were fielded last year. Two of the three athletes who turned out are foreign exchange students. “We anticipated five to 10 kids,” Veile said. “We typically have a low turnout. But I don’t know if it’s burnout or what.”
