Benewah County St. Maries

Police Sgt. Jim Hess is headed to Kosovo as part of an international law enforcement development team. He and a thousand other officers from around the world will help establish a new police force in the country. Officers will serve in Kosovo for one year. Several officers from Kootenai, Latah and Bonner counties have also been accepted in the global peacekeeping program.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Panhandle Health District is sponsoring an immunization party Mondays from 1 to 4:30 p.m. to encourage Bonner County residents to immunize their children. The event features cake and ice cream, games and a chance to win a mountain bike. The event is made possible through the Sandpoint Rotary Club. For information, call (208) 263-5159.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Used fishing line and spools can be recycled if brought to Fins and Feathers Tackle Shop on 1816 Sherman in Coeur d’Alene. The line will be sent to a firm in Iowa that has recycled more than 7 million miles of fishing line since 1990.

Latah County Moscow

University of Idaho professor Leonard R. Johnson has been appointed interim executive director for institutional planning and budget. Johnson previously served as interim dean of the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences, and currently heads the college’s Department of Forest Products. The university is continuing a nationwide search for an executive director.

Shoshone County Wallace

The Heritage Huckleberry Festival will take place Aug. 20-21. Events include a huckleberry bake-off, parade and a performance of “Memoirs of a Madam” by Susan O’Connell. Residents will dress in period clothing to carry out the heritage theme and characters will perform on street corners.

WASHINGTON

Pend Oreille County Newport

The Selkirk Superstars were spectaculer again this year at the state Special Olympics. The team brought home several medals, including golds by Johnny Mateer and Richard Stone. Other team members who won medals include Stephanie Lubahn, Troy Enyeart, Mary Morgan, Steven McKenzie, Joe Romero, Tony Newman, Danny Woelk and Jimmy Rowley. Superstars uniforms were donated by Boeing employees.

Spokane County Spokane

Whitman County Colfax

Whitman County commissioners will hold a July 26 public hearing on the Moscow-Pullman corridor development issue. City, county and university planning officials from the Palouse region met July 1 to share concerns over the Pullman-Moscow corridor district. Whitman County officials have been moving forward with plans to increase development along the eight-mile stretch of Highway 270 in order to generate tax revenue and encourage growth. If a conditional use permit is granted, a variety of businesses, including office buildings, hotels and auto dealerships, could be developed along the stretch.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Troy

The Montana Department of Transportation is planning to repair several sections of a stretch of U.S. Highway 2 on Yaak Hill to stabilize the slope. The project, spanning less than a mile, includes installation of six timber retaining walls, placement of steel I-beams and timber into an underlying rock formation, and benching and landscaping adjacent slopes.
