Eloise Hawkins, chairman and chief executive of the authority that ran stock car races at Bowman Gray Stadium, died Monday in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a battle with cancer. She was 82. Since 1970, Hawkins was head of the Winston-Salem Speedway Inc.
Former NBA player Dontonio Wingfield pleaded guilty to assaulting two suburban Cincinnati police officers.
Wingfield, the former University of Cincinnati forward, who went on to play for the Seattle SuperSonics and Portland Trail Blazers, could be sentenced to as many as 18 months behind bars and fined $5,000.
Niatross, harness racing’s Horse of the Decade for the 1980s, was euthanized in Colts Neck, N.J., after a large cancerous mass was discovered in his abdomen.
The breed’s first sub-1:50 performer, Niatross was unbeaten in 13 starts as a 2-year-old in 1979.
