Spring Burns Planned For Sandpoint Areas
Starting in late March and continuing into May, the Sandpoint Ranger District fire crew will begin controlled burns to improve forage plants for big game animals, the district announced this week.
Controlled burns are planned for Antelope Mountain, Gold Creek, Grouse Creek and Kirby Mountain areas.
Prescribed fires help rejuvenate shrubs that are important food for big game animals in their winter range, according to wildlife biologist Dave Roberts. Fire helps to “prune” the shrubs that have grown tall and woody.
Ground conditions are important to the timing of the burn, according to Dave Lux, district fire management officer. Following the snow-melt, fire crews have a short period of time when conditions are dry enough to burn but before vegetation has leafed out.
Spring burns are ideal because the unstable air helps disperse the smoke, Lux said. For more information, call the Sandpoint Ranger District at 263-5111.
