James Saunders Kennewick

Two services will be held for slain Washington State Patrol Trooper James E. Saunders at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Tri-Cities Coliseum in Kennewick and at 3:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Cascade High School in Leavenworth, Wash. Graveside service will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Leavenworth. Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Kennewick is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Saunders, 31, was shot to death during a traffic stop in Pasco Thursday.

He was born in Clarkston, Wash.

He was raised in Leavenworth and graduated from Cascade High School in 1986. He graduated with an associate of arts degree from Wenatchee Valley College in 1988 and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Whitworth College in 1990.

While at Whitworth he served as an aide to U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton in his Spokane office.

He began his career with the Washington State Patrol in January 1991, serving as a cadet at the governor’s mansion. After being commissioned as a trooper in December of 1991, he was assigned to the Grand Coulee, Wash., area.

In 1996 he was transferred to Kennewick, where he also served on the executive protection unit and was a field training officer.

Mr. Saunders is survived by his wife of six years, Billie; a daughter, Megan Saunders, at home; his parents, John and Jan Saunders of Wenatchee; a sister, Jennifer Liss of Spokane; and his grandmother, Gloria Browning of Wenatchee.

Gertrude Prentice Coeur d’Alene

Private graveside service for Gertrude R. Prentice, 71, was Tuesday in Missoula.

Mrs. Prentice, who was born in Omaha, Neb., died Thursday.

She married Donald Prentice in 1947 and lived in Omaha before moving to Missoula. She was a homemaker and also operated the Plum Dandy Gift Shop in Missoula from 1980 until 1998.

Mrs. Prentice also co-owned the Blue Skies Gift and Garden Shop in Leavenworth, Wash., with her daughter. She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1998.

She was active as a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Social Services Office in Coeur d’Alene.

Her husband, Donald, preceded her in death.

Survivors include five daughters, Kathy Prentice of Leavenworth, Janet Wagner of Indiana, Barb Stoddard of Missoula, Sally Kohler of Oregon and Mary Knight of Post Falls; a brother, Robert Hassman of Missoula; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bertha (Callin) Napuk Spokane

Graveside service for Bertha (Callin) Napuk, 91, was Monday at Mount Nebo Cemetery.

Born in Cincinnati, Mrs. Napuk died Friday.

She was an 80-year Spokane resident and graduated from North Central High School in 1926.

Mrs. Napuk worked as a secretary at Metallic Arts Lighting.

She was a member of Temple Beth Shalom, Hadasah and B’Nai B’rith Women.

Her husband, Roland “Chick” Napuk, died in 1998.

There are no surviving family members.

Ethel McCrory Osburn, Idaho

Memorial service for Ethel Mae McCrory, 83, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Osburn Community Baptist Church. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCrory, who was born in Jonah, Texas, died last Wednesday.

In 1938 she married Clarence McCrory. They lived in Texas and she worked as a tool clerk attendant for LTV Airplane Mfg. Co. in Dallas for 25 years. She also grew and sold produce.

Mrs. McCrory moved to Osburn in 1995 from Kemp, Texas. She was a member of Osburn Community Baptist Church and the Kemp Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Tinker of Osburn; a brother, Dee Guthrie of Kemp; a sister, Florence Enslow of California; and seven grandchildren.

Ann Baiar Spokane

Memorial Mass for Ann Lois Baiar, 87, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Roman Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Baiar died Saturday.

She worked as an insurance broker at Broken United American Insurance Agency for 25 years.

Mrs. Baiar was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Her husband, Vincent Baiar, died in 1988.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Baiar of Vancouver, Wash., and James Baiar of Columbia Falls, Mont.; a sister, Grace Schuessler of Spokane; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Helen Boutin-Reinbold Spokane

Visitation for Helen Mary Boutin-Reinbold, 91, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Vigil service will follow at 7 p.m. at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 33-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Boutin-Reinbold died Sunday. She was born in St. Gabriel, Quebec.

She made custom draperies for Bell Furniture.

Two husbands, Alyre Boutin and Louis Reinbold, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Relyea of Spokane; a son, James Boutin of New York; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Dalsanders Spokane

Visitation for Elizabeth M. “Betty’ Dalsanders, 80, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Memorial Mass is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A 55-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Dalsanders died Monday. She was born in Centerville, Wash.

She worked as a waitress in Spokane and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Teamsters Union Local 690.

Her husband, Charles Dalsanders, died in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and Patrick Dalsanders, both of Spokane; a daughter, Joanne Girolami of Tacoma; a brother, Bill Olson of Centerville; two sisters, Margaret McConnell of Winston, Ore., and Elaine Knox of Portland; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Louis Wise Hayden Lake, Idaho

A celebration of life for Louis R. “Lou” Wise, 78, will be held at a later date in California. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wise, who was born in Clifton Heights, Pa., died Thursday.

He had served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He settled in Port Angeles, Wash., in 1986.

Mr. Wise was a barbershop singing chorus director in Port Angeles and a 38-year member of the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.

He moved to Hayden Lake three years ago from Port Angeles and was a member of the National Rifle Association and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Diane; three daughters, Barbara Loar, Sherri deGraaff and Terri Langsea, all of California; a stepson, David Huskey of California; two stepdaughters, Cheryll Cook of Hayden, Idaho, and Lauri Murley of Utah; a brother, Robert Wise of Alabama; and 15 grandchildren.

Walter Hiatt Spokane

Memorial service for Walter Lewis Hiatt, 85, will be at 2 p.m. today at Audubon Park United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hiatt, who died Friday, was born in Dacoma, Okla.

He started working as a mailer in the newspaper business when he was 14. He worked for the Wichita (Kan.) Beacon, the Billings (Mont.) Gazette and the Butte (Mont.) Standard.

In 1933 he married Elaine Kellams.

In 1948 he moved to Spokane and began working for The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Daily Chronicle.

In 1954 Mr. Hiatt and his wife started Walt’s Mailing Service. They retired in 1979.

He was a member of Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Fred and Terry Hiatt, both of Spokane; a daughter, Joan Patrick of Lake Lawrence, Wash.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Heber Routh Spokane

Private memorial service for podiatrist Heber Howard Routh, 84, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Routh, who was born in Charity, Mo., died Friday. He was a 53-year Spokane resident.

He graduated with a degree in podiatry from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he also was a member and president of AGK fraternity.

He practiced podiatry from 1946 until 1992 in Spokane.

He was a member of the Exchange Club, El Katif Shrine and the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. He served as president of the Downtown Exchange Club, was a member of the American College of Foot Surgeons, and past president of the Washington State Podiatry Association, the Mavericks and the Spokane Club.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Stacia Routh of Spokane; three sisters, Annabell Stillman of Rhode Island, and Ardinell Bredize and Virginia Owensby, both of Springfield, Mo.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. George’s School or to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Ernest Smith Post Falls

No service will be held for Ernest Gus Smith, 89, at his request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Waterville, Wash., died Sunday.

He moved to Spirit Lake in 1918 and attended school there. He then lived in Newport, Wash., and worked as a logger in the timber industry.

In 1965 Mr. Smith moved to the Post Falls area and continued to work in the timber industry.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Johnson of Rathdrum, Idaho; two sisters, Evelyn Hoxie of Council, Idaho, and Laura Barrett of Wisconsin; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Roger Schnell Spokane

Private memorial service will be held for Roger M. Schnell, 76. A reception is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Spokane Country Club. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 35-year Spokane resident, Mr. Schnell died Friday. He was born in Portland.

He graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

After graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy, Mr. Schnell served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired with the rank of commander.

He owned Market Equipment Co. in Spokane and retired in 1988.

He was a member of the Spokane Club, Spokane Country Club and North Spokane Rotary. He also was a member of the Retired Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joan; two sons, Daniel and Michael Schnell, both of Spokane; a daughter, Elizabeth Mills of Spokane; a sister, Phyllis Strebig of Portland; and four grandchildren.

Patricia Simmons Spokane

Funeral Mass for Patricia Bernadette Simmons, 90, was Monday at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Simmons died Wednesday.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Women’s Club, Pope John Volunteers, Active Club, Bel Canto and St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Her husband, Garnet Simmons, died in 1998.

Survivors include a sons, David Simmons of Fairfax, Calif.; two daughters, Jean Simmons of Spokane and Rita Dinger of Bellevue, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lilac Blind Foundation.

Mary Meese Spokane

Memorial service for Mary J. Meese, 19, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Miss Meese died Saturday.

She graduated from North Central High School this year and was a student at Spokane Falls Community College.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Carol and Steve Swider; her grandparents, Connie Robertson, and Wally and Carol Robertson, and Deanna Klotzbueher; and her great-grandmother, Lois Homan.
