St. Maries
Bill Shriver has been appointed interim manager of the St. Maries branch of the Bank of Latah. Shriver had 35 years of banking experience before retiring from WestOne in 1997. He will manage the St. Maries bank until a permanent manager is hired.

Sandpoint
The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Idaho State Chili Cook-off Sept. 18 at Bonner Mall. The event begins at 11 a.m. and will raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Competitions include chili verde, salsa and traditional red chili. Public judging for the People’s Choice award will costs $1 per cup or six cups for $5.

Anyone wanting to quit using tobacco can sign up for a University of Idaho sponsored tobacco cessation program. The Quit Tobacco class begins Sept. 14 in the Student Health Conference Room on the Moscow campus. The six-week class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. The program is open to the public and costs $25. To register, call Student Health Services at (208) 885-6693.

Bob Kirkland from the EPA office in Seattle will speak at the Shoshone County Realtors Association on Tuesday. Kirkland will speak on lead disclosure rules and regulations at the 8 a.m. meeting at the Broken Wheel Restaurant. The Silver Valley People’s Action Coalition also has asked Kirkland to speak to the community at 7 p.m. at the PAC office, 120 West Cameron Avenue.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is considering a hearing to gather input on the reclamation of the former W.R. Grace vermiculite mine. The hearing would gather comments on a request by the Lincoln County commissioners to release a $67,000 reclamation bond for the property, now owned by Kootenai Development Co. The deadline for questions and information requests is Sept. 30. A hearing and possible site tour could be scheduled for October.

The fire department was not called to a blaze at the Pend Oreille Pines Nursing Home recently. That’s because the fire was on 104 birthday candles. Staff and residents helped William Lamprecht celebrate his 104th birthday Aug. 28. Lamprecht, a former farmer and railroad mechanic, moved to Newport in 1998 from Odessa.

The Eastern Washington University chapter of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity has been named Best Chapter of the year from among 250 chapters nationally. The chapter, only 4 years old, was selected using such criteria as outstanding scholarship, philanthropy, brotherhood and membership education.
