Ammonia Standards For River May Ease
Idaho health officials on Wednesday will consider a temporary rule that will raise the allowable level of ammonia in the Spokane River.
The move would help the city of Coeur d’Alene finance an upgrade for its wastewater treatment plant. The Idaho Board of Health and Welfare meets Wednesday in Boise to consider the update for Spokane River water quality standards. Last year, the federal Environmental Protection Agency determined that ammonia limits can be eased and still protect fish and other life in the river.
Current ammonia standards are based on 1984 EPA findings.
If a temporary rule is adopted, the board will take public comment before adopting a final version.
