Waltz Wins
TRACK AND FIELD
Washington State senior Ian Waltz won the men’s shot put Saturday during the U.S. Track Coaches Association national team invitational at the University of Texas.
Waltz threw the shot 62 feet, 3-3/4 inches. He also finished third in the discus at 190-7. Teammate Vinnie Pecht was fifth at 184-7.
WSU’s men were otherwise limited by injuries and subpar performances. The Cougars finished 10th in the 14-team event won by the host Longhorns.
WSU’s women placed seventh among 14 teams. Texas again won the team competition.
Second-place finishes by Cougars women were: Mandy Borschowa, discus, in a season-best 170-3; Randi Smith, 400 hurdles, 57.84 seconds; and Alishia Booterbaugh, 800, 2:06.72.
Sharika Higgins ran personal-best times of 11.5 in the women’s 100 and 23.43 in the 200.
