Workshop Monday On Mine Waste Cleanup

From Staff Reports

People will have a chance Monday to weigh in on state plans for cleanup of Silver Valley mine waste when state officials hold a workshop in Cataldo.

The workshop is the final public meeting on the state’s effort toward consensus on cleanup before a public summit meeting in January. The meeting is scheduled for 1-9 p.m. at Canyon School, 27405 Schoolhouse Loop in Cataldo. Holding the meeting in Cataldo should make it easier for a range of citizens to attend, said a spokeswoman for the Shoshone Natural Resources Coalition. The Silver Valley group wants to limit U.S. Environmental Protection Agency control in the valley.

“Local participation is very important in order to assure local needs are met in designing cleanup plans for the basin,” spokeswoman Liz Arnold said. For more information on the meeting, call Kathy Johnson with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality at (208) 783-5781.
