Freshman Stefan Bailie had three hits, including a run-scoring double as the Washington State Cougars snapped a two-game losing streak Sunday afternoon by defeating tournament host Texas-Arlington 7-3 in the final game of the 2000 Arlington Morning News Invitational baseball tournament at Allan Saxe Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Zach Fisher did not allow an earned run in 5-2/3 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the year.

Pierce Loveless was saddled with the loss for the Mavericks (8-5) after giving up five runs and seven hits in his 5-2/3 innings.

The win improved WSU’s record to 4-6.

Bailie has hit safely in all 10 games for the Cougars.

WSU will conclude its four-game road trip in Texas today with a single, non-tournament game against Texas-Arlington.

Huskies split

The Washington baseball team split a pair of one-run games, rallying to beat Northern Iowa 5-4 before falling to Northwestern, 2-1, in the final day of the Rawlings Spring Training Invitational in Phoenix.

Washington improved to 1-4 with the split.

After being held to only one hit through the first five innings of game one, the Huskies finally got to Northern Iowa starter Matt Cobb (0-1) in the sixth, scoring five runs to take the lead. Marc Rittenhouse’s two-run double was the key hit.

Lefty Taylor Grant (1-0) faced the minimum over 3-1/3 innings for the win. The Newport High product didn’t allow a hit, run or walk while fanning five.

In game two, the Huskies were shut down by Northwestern starter Gabe Ribas (1-0), who held the Huskies to only two hits over the seven-inning complete game. UW junior Matt Gardner allowed two runs on three hits over four innings for the loss.

Gonzaga rained out

Gonzaga’s baseball double-header against Saint Mary’s College was rained out. No make-up date has been set for the double-header.

In Saturday’s single game against the Gaels, Gonzaga was leading 6-1 in the top of the eighth inning when the game was cancelled due to darkness. A ruling on whether that game will be called official will be decided on today.

The Zags now prepare for their second in-state rival series against the University of Washington. Gonzaga will play a four-game series in Seattle starting with a single game on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
