Schweitzer Skiers Set 1-Year Record

Schweitzer Mountain Resort has set a new record for skier visits at the ski area for a single season.

On Saturday, Dale Hammerly of Moscow, Idaho, became the 177,112th skier to visit the mountain. The last record season was the winter of 1993/94 when 177,111 skiers visited.

Hammerly was given a season pass for the rest of the season and a bag of Schweitzer products.

The resort didn’t set any new records for a single day, however. The biggest day this year was Jan. 16 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend when about 5,200 people visited the resort, said Ingrid Campbell, Schweitzer spokeswoman.

The daily record of 5,803 skiers was set Jan. 14, 1994.

To help handle the high skier traffic, Schweitzer is installing a high speed quad chairlift on the backside of the mountain. The lift, called Outback Express, will move skiers twice as fast as the lift it’s replacing.

Part of this year’s high volume of skiers may be attributed to the resort’s $200 season passes, which were promoted last summer. Schweitzer is expected to announce a new season pass promotion today.
