Higgins Nets Two In Shadow Victory
Zane Higgins added two goals to his Spokane Shadow career record and Ryan Wittstruck’s play in goal made them stand up as the Shadow defeated Willamette Valley 2-0 in a Premier Development League soocer match Friday at Corvallis, Ore.
Higgins, who recently became the Shadow’s career goals leader, connected on a header 21 minutes into the match and added some insurance in the 88th minute. On that second goal, Higgins was about 40 yards out and raced in one-on-one against keeper Colin McMillen and drilled the ball into the top corner from about 12 yards out.
Spokane’s defense, in posting its second consecutive shutout, held the Firebirds to five shots on goal that resulted in four saves for Wittstruck. The Shadow blanked Yakima 1-0 last weekend at Albi Stadium.
Spokane (3-2-3), in fourth place in the six-team Northwest Division, has taken 2 of 3 from fifth-place Willamette Valley (2-7-0) this season.
The Shadow play Sunday at the Cascade Surge in Salem, Ore.
In today’s Northwest Division games, first-place Seattle (8-0-0) plays at Cascade (1-6-2) and Abbotsford (5-4) is at Yakima (4-4-1).
