Indians Get 3Rd Straight Win Vancouver’S Late Surge Almost Too Much For Spokane, Which Wins Fourth One-Run Game

The Spokane Indians came out fighting Tuesday night, scoring six runs by the second inning, but barely held on for a 8-7 Northwest League baseball victory over the Vancouver Canadians. It was the fourth one-run victory for the Indians.

The Indians opened the second inning with five straight hits and scored five runs, the most scored in a single inning this season. The inning included a two-out RBI double by Chad Santos that scored Marco Cunningham. It was Santos’ seventh RBI.

Juan Guzman hit a two-run, stand-up triple in the second and finished 2 for 3. Justin Cowan hit a two-run single in the sixth.

Indians shortstop Darren Fenster finished 3 for 4 with one RBI and two stolen bases. Vancouver rallied in the seventh, scoring five runs off right-hander Wes Wilkerson to close within 8-7.

The Canadians didn’t get much help in the seventh from third baseman Cristian Reyes, who accounted for two outs. He opened and closed the inning with strikeouts.

G.W. Keller, who finished with 4 RBIs on three hits, singled home two runs in the inning for Vancouver.

Indians pitcher Michael Natale (2-0) got the win, replacing Wilkerson in the seventh. He pitched 2 innings allowing only two hits, no walks and striking out four batters.

Tyler Gilpatrick, who started for the Canadians, allowed five earned runs in the loss. Today’s starters will be Edwin Minya (1-0) for Vancouver and Zach McClellan (0-0) for Spokane.

The Kansas City Royals signed Jon Metzger on Tuesday. He is a 13th-round draft pick out of the University of Virginia. Metzger is a left-handed pitcher and should arrive Thursday in time for the Indians’ next homes series with Boise that begins Friday.
