A Bread Winner
To the average person, “La Brea” probably translates to tar pits. But true foodies know that’s also the name of a pioneering artisan bakery in Los Angeles.
Now La Brea Bakery breads are available in stores across the country, from basic baguettes to such distinctive varieties as roasted garlic, potato dill and kalamata olive.
They’re shipped partially baked and frozen, to be finished at the store. Ask for a frozen loaf and bake it off at home to get the freshest flavor — and avoid any fossils.
Cost: From $2 to $5 per loaf, depending on variety and size.
Available: In Spokane at the Rocket Market and most Rosauers supermarkets, and in Sandpoint at Pend Oreille Pasta.
