Kingsley, Reds Rip Shadow

Zach Kingsley put the hurt on his former Spokane Shadow teammates Saturday night.

Kingsley scored a pair of goals in the first half and set up a second-half goal to guide the Yakima Reds to a 6-0 win over visiting Spokane in a United Soccer League Northwest Division match.

Kingsley, a graduate of Shadle Park, scored his first goal on a header to the back post. He assisted on Yakima’s final goal, beating two Shadow defenders down the left wing and centering the ball to Buck Namba.

At Shadle, Kingsley played for current Shadow coach Stuart Saunders.

The Reds improved their division record to 2-1-1.

Spokane, 0-2-2 in the division, plays its next four matches on its home turf, Albi Stadium. The Shadow’s next match is Saturday against the Abbotsford 86ers.

Wrestling

The honors keep coming for Travis Pascoe, the nation’s No. 1-ranked high school wrestler at 189 pounds.

Pascoe was named a Wrestling USA Magazine Dream Team All-American and will be featured in the magazine’s annual poster photograph.

He also has been honored as an Asics Dream Team All-American.

Pascoe, a three-time state cham pion for Gonzaga Prep’s Bullpups and winner this year at the Dapper Dan Classic in Pennsylvania and the Dream Team Classic in Minnesota, will wrestle for the University of Nebraska.

Women’s rowing

Washington qualified two more boats for today’s finals at the NCAA championships on Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

UW’s varsity 8 won its semifinal by finishing the 2,000 meters in 6:26.29. Defending champion and No. 1-ranked Brown won the first semifinal in 6:25.79.

Washington’s junior varsity 8 led all the way to win its heat in a repechage, or second chance.

The Huskies’ varsity 4 qualified for the finals on Friday.

Golf

The Lilac Invitational, in its 41st year, has lined up Guy Hyatt’s Golf as the title sponsor for this year’s event, which will open a four-day, 72-hole run at The Fairways at West Terrace on July 5.

John Durgan, general manager of The Fairways, said he hopes the addition of a title sponsor will result in a major increase in the tournament purse, which was $40,000 last year.

“We don’t have a firm dollar amount yet,” Durgan said, “but we’d like to get it up to $50,000.”

Invitations were sent out this month and entry forms are available at golf courses throughout the Pacific Northwest. Entries, according to Durgan, will be limited to 60 professionals and 120 amateurs.

The official name will be Guy Hyatt’s Golf presents the 41st annual Lilac Invitational.

Baseball

Joe Spears and Dan Thigpen combined on a no-hitter as the Spokane Heat select team opened its season by defeating Bellevue 10-2 at Avista Stadium.

Spears struck out seven, Thigpen four. Thigpen and Dan Stucky both went 2 for 4.
