Cougars Grant Release To Embattled Burnett
Running back Deon Burnett, who quit the Washington State University football team at halftime of Saturday’s Apple Cup game in Pullman, has been given his release by coach Mike Price.
“In all of my competitive experiences, I have never seen that happen or heard of it happening,” Price said. “I know this has been a difficult season for him, but he gave me no indication he was considering leaving the program. I appreciate what he has done for us and am sorry this season did not turn out well for him.”
A sophomore, Burnett played intermittently this fall after setting a school freshman record by rushing for 974 yards in 1999, when he scored 12 touchdowns. This season, he had gained only 345 yards and averaged 3.7 yards per carry, a full yard less than a year ago.
