How they scored

First quarter

Arizona State 7, Washington State 0: Mike Williams 1-yard run. Mike Barth kick. Six plays, 36 yards, 2:33. Arizona State’s Solomon Bates picked off Jason Gesser and ran it back to the Cougars 36. From there, quarterback Jeff Krohn hit Richard Williams on a 27-yard crossing route. The Sun Devils kept it on the ground from there.

Arizona State 14, Washington State 0: Tom Pace 2-yard run. Barth kick. Five plays, 17 yards, 1:29. Arizona State’s Justin Taplin returned an Alan Cox punt 47 yards, setting the Sun Devils at the WSU 17. Krohn hit Todd Heap on a 9-yard pass and the rest of the time the Sun Devils kept it on the ground.

Arizona State 14, Washington State 3: Anousith Wilaikul 37-yard field goal. Six plays, 60 yards, 1:41. For the third time in three drives, the Cougars crossed the ASU 40-yard line. For the first time in three drives, they didn’t throw an interception. Gesser hooked up with Milton Wynn on a 55-yard pass play to set up the field goal.

Second quarter

Arizona State 14, Washington State 10: Deon Burnett 8-yard run. Wilaikul kick. Two plays, 21 yards, :24. Arizona State starting quarterback Jeff Krohn went out with a mild concussion. Griffin Goodman came in and threw an interception on his second pass. WSU safety Billy Newman made the pick at the ASU 21. Burnett took over from there with a pair of runs.

Arizona State 14, Washington State 12: Team safety. The Washington State defense, on the strength of back-to-back sacks, pinned the Sun Devils deep in their own territory. Long snapper Jay Breckenridge then hiked the ball over the head of punter Nick Murphy and through the back of the end zone.

Arizona State 20, Washington State 12: Donnie O’Neal 34-yard pass from Griffin Goodman. Conversion fails. One play, 34 yards, :09. Roderick Denetso blocked Alan Cox’s punt, setting the Sun Devils up at the 34-yard line. On the first and only play of the drive, Goodman threw into double coverage. WSU’s Marcus Trufant and Mory Banks went for what looked like a sure interception. Both missed the ball. O’Neal caught it for the score.

Third quarter

Arizona State 20, Washington State 20: Marcus Williams 56-yard pass from Gesser. Conversion good. Five plays, 84 yards, 2:07. Facing a third-and-6, Gesser found Williams on a slant. Arizona State’s Nijrell Eason and Alfred Williams had chances at the tackle. Both missed and Marcus Williams outran them to the end zone.

Overtime

Arizona State 23, Washington State 20: Barth 41-yard field goal. After a bad snap and a fumbled hold on third-and-15, the Sun Devils got another chance. This time the snap, the hold and the kick were perfect.
