Eagles outlast Ravens, lose Buckhalter for year

From wire reports

Terrell Owens caught Donovan McNabb’s long pass in stride, raced into the end zone, put his hands on his hips, stared at the crowd and nodded his head.

Take that, Ray Lewis.

McNabb and Owens connected on an 81-yard TD pass on Philadelphia’s first play, and rookie J.R. Reed returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score, leading the Eagles over the Baltimore Ravens 26-17 in a preseason game Friday night at Philadelphia.

But the victory was costly for Philadelphia, which lost running back Correll Buckhalter after he tore the patella tendon in his right knee in the first quarter. Buckhalter probably will miss the season.

The Eagles were counting on Buckhalter and third-year pro Brian Westbrook to share the running duties after Duce Staley signed with Pittsburgh in the off-season.

The Eagles lost rookie seventh-round pick Bruce Perry to a season-ending shoulder injury in the preseason opener, leaving second-year pro Reno Mahe as Westbrook’s backup.

•John Henderson set the tone for a dominating first half by intercepting a pass on the first play from scrimmage, and the Jaguars shrugged off early mistakes on offense and special teams to beat Tampa Bay 14-6 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Quinn Gray threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Hatchette, and Rich Alexis ran 1 yard for another TD for Jacksonville, which missed three field goals and failed to take advantage of two turnovers deep in Bucs territory in the first quarter alone.

•Matt Schaub threw three TD passes in relief of Michael Vick, leading the Atlanta Falcons to a 27-24 preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings at Atlanta.

The rookie from Virginia completed 16 of 19 passes for 205 yards and no interceptions.

Daunte Culpepper and Gus Frerotte had long TD passes for the Vikings.

McGahee reportedly wants trade

Running back Willis McGahee has asked the Buffalo Bills to trade him if he is not their starter on opening day, a source told the Associated Press.

McGahee’s request was not issued as an ultimatum, but the player made clear he won’t be happy playing backup to incumbent Travis Henry, said the source, who is close to McGahee, and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold and team president Tom Donahoe denied the report.

Around the league

New Orleans Saints linebacker Sedrick Hodge has been suspended for four games by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy. … The Miami Dolphins have asked Ricky Williams to return $8.6 million they say the running back owes the team because he has decided to retire.
