Big West honors UI’s Meek a second straight week

Senior middle blocker Sarah Meek earned her second consecutive Big West volleyball player of the week honor after leading the Vandals to wins over Washington State, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.

Meek averaged 4.5 kills per game on .364 hitting percentage and 1.5 blocks per game. She recorded a double-double in the Vandals’ three-game sweep of Riverside with 16 kills and 10 blocks. The 10 blocks is a season high and ties her career high. She also recorded her 30th consecutive double-figure kill match (dating back to last season) in the five-game win over Fullerton.

Meek was the athlete of the week last week as well after leading the Vandals to wins over Cal Poly and then 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara.

Idaho prep soccer

Lake City converted twice within a minute midway through the second half to collect a 2-0 win over visiting Lewiston in a 5A Region I match Monday in Coeur d’Alene.

The Timberwolves, who meet rival Coeur d’Alene for a state berth at 3:30 p.m.Wednesday, saw Ciara Kremer convert off a Lizzy Fraser corner kick at 60 minutes, followed by a Holly Meyer goal from 10 yards out inside the near post at 61 minutes.

• In a 4A Region I playoff, senior Angie Menghini had a goal and an assist to lead Sandpoint to a 2-0 win over visiting Post Falls.

Menghini scored on a crossing pass from the top of the 18 into the far corner, and assisted on senior Elle Carne’s goal at 21 minutes. Carne had a flick off a Menghini corner kick, the ball popped up off the Post Falls keeper, off Carne’s chest and into the net.

Sandpoint will be home for a second-round match at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s unreported Moscow-Lakeland match.

• Santiago Porto had two goals and two assists to lead Bonners Ferry (12-3-3, 6-0 league) to a 9-0 win over visiting Priest River in the final Intermountain League boys match of the season. The same teams open 3A District play Friday at the Coeur d’Alene complex.

Idaho prep volleyball

Third-seeded Lakeland, which knocked off No. 2 Sandpoint in four games, will visit No. 1 Moscow in a second-round winners’ bracket match at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 4A Regionals. Lakeland won 25-20, 17-25, 25-17 and 26-24. Kelsey James of Sandpoint had 23 assists, six service aces and 11 kills.

Moscow defeated No. 4 Post Falls 25-7, 19-25, 25-11, 25-10 in the other first-round match. Kelsey Taylor had 15 kills and six blocks for Moscow. Post Falls will play at Sandpoint on Wednesday in a loser-out match.

GSL volleyball

Mt. Spokane and Shadle Park, who shared sixth place in Greater Spokane League volleyball, will play for the final district playoff berth tonight.

The tiebreaker is at 7, at Mead. No GSL passes will be accepted.

Both the Wildcats and Highlanders finished the year with 8-5 records. The winner advances into the double-elimination District 8 tournament beginning Thursday at Gonzaga Prep. The loser is eliminated.

District will continue Friday at University and Mead. The tournament concludes Saturday at Mt. Spokane beginning at 1 p.m.

The 3A district tournament is Thursday at Cheney beginning at 5:30 p.m.
