LOOKING AHEAD
Three Greater Spokane League football games will dominate the landscape Friday night. All three will have a part to play in determining playoff seeding.
In the 3A ranks, Clarkston (2-1) travels to East Valley (2-1). Although overall record will determine the playoff picture, games with other 3A schools will probably determine who advances. The Knights are in the middle of three consecutive games against 3A opponents (North Central next week).
In 4A play, Lewis and Clark (3-0) travels to Central Valley (2-1) trying to ruin the Bears’ homecoming. In the late game at Albi, Shadle Park (1-2) tries to keep its playoff bid breathing against Gonzaga Prep (3-0).
There is one big GSL volleyball match as well tonight, with undefeated University, fresh off its three-game sweep of Mead, traveling to Mt. Spokane, one of three 7-1 teams.

LOOKING AROUND
One for the Dean’s list
G-Prep girls soccer player Sarah Dean made what appeared to be a spectacular shot, 25 yards out from the goal from the left sideline against University last Friday. It boomed across the field and hooked into the upper-right corner of the net to tie the match at 1. G-Prep ultimately won in a shootout over the Titans. But G-Prep coach Christian Birrer called the shot fairly routine. “For her it’s not uncommon, but it is a difficult shot to make,” he said. “And it’s so hard for goalkeepers to deal with. Usually they are trained to defend the near post.” Dean and U-Hi’s Tonya Schnibbe, Birrer said, have cannons for legs and they don’t have to exert a lot of effort to generate a lot of power. What is unpredictable, Birrer continued, is the shootout. G-Prep had lost one two days before to Ferris, but, after practicing shootouts between the two matches, shot 4 for 4 against the Titans. “It’s almost impossible to practice a shootout because it’s a simple shot technically,” said Birrer. “It’s the pressure of doing it that becomes difficult. Things get inside their heads. Even pros miss penalty kicks.” … Mead finished third and Ferris seventh Saturday at the Stanford (Calif.) Invitational, a meet with more than 4,000 college and high school runners. Mead’s Laef Barnes finished 13th in his seeded race (14th overall) in 15 minutes, 53 seconds. Teammates Tyler Nepon and Steven Gimpel timed 16:09 and 16:11 for 22nd and 23rd. The highest Ferris placer was Brendan Chestnut in 26th. West Valley finished fifth in the boys Division 4 race and the girls placed ninth. For WV, Curtis Fitzhugh ran 16:47 for ninth in his flight and Larson Agee was 14th in hers. WV’s boys were 43rd out of 160 schools. … To say the Post Falls football team has capitalized on turnovers is an understatement. PF has 17 defensive takeaways and three offensive turnovers.
