LCSC rallies past Cougars

D.J. Kooken homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday to lead the Lewis-Clark State Warriors to a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory over the Washington State Cougars at Lewiston.

WSU’s Brady Everett tied the score at 5 in the top of the ninth with a one-out single through the left side, scoring Jay Miller. But after a strikeout to start the bottom of the inning, Kooken delivered the victory to LCSC (37-6). WSU fell to 18-24.

•Shawn Gizynski and Mike Campo each had two-run singles in the second game to allow Community Colleges of Spokane to achieve a split of a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader against Columbia Basin College at SFCC.

CBC (26-8 overall, 12-6 NWAACC) scored seven runs on four hits during the second inning of the first game en route to a 12-5 victory.

CCS (20-9, 11-7) rebounded to win the nightcap 4-3. Luke Farden struck out five in seven innings and allowed two earned runs. Joe Byers finished for his fifth save.

Softball

Washington used a sacrifice fly and two home runs to defeat 10th-ranked UCLA 3-2 at Husky Softball Stadium.

Dominique Lastrapes and Lauren Greer homered for 22nd-ranked UW (25-15, 5-6 Pac-10). Kristen Dedmon had a two-run single for UCLA (24-12, 5-6).

Track and field

University of Idaho track and field athletes Mary Kamau and Manuela Kurrat were both honored by the Big West Conference for their performances last weekend at the Oregon Invitational.

Kamau, a junior from Kiambu, Kenya, was named the conference co-Track Athlete of the Week while Kurrat, a senior from Halle, Germany, was selected as the Field Athlete of the Week.
