Throw a smashing open-house party

MS

If you don’t want to be bound by strict timeframes and a set schedule for your next social event, why not host an open-house party? Here, guests can drop by at your house when they want and leave at their leisure. The ebb and flow of guests will ensure there’s plenty of room for mingling, and being less bound to structure may allow you to enjoy your event more.

Here are some inviting ideas to get you started:

Think Up a Theme

A theme can make party planning painless. If your home is decorated in a certain hue, why not pick a color scheme for your bash that will complement your design sense? Plan a “blue” party, and set out napkins, plates, glasses and candles in this color. Guests who care to bring a gift can select one in your signature color.

Another idea is to have a wine-tasting party. Guests can bring their favorite brand or year and share it with others. And don’t forget the possibility of a musical backdrop, with a potluck CD party to set the mood. Ask each friend to bring an old CD, and everyone can swap. Remember to play some of your guests’ old favorites as they tour your new home.

An Inviting Home

Make guests feel comfortable in your space. Offer plenty of seating possibilities, and create areas for chatting by setting up a few seats around small snack or coffee tables throughout your home. A delicate scent of apple cinnamon or baked cookies will make your home seem cozy and comfortable. Remember to include specific directions on your party invites, and consider hanging balloons or a sign outside your home to lead the way.

Decorating the Digs

Don’t feel like you have to go crazy in decorating. A few floral or candle arrangements are all you need to highlight your space. To add a personal touch, display some photos of family and friends throughout your home. At night, well-placed lit candles give a flattering glow to any room. If you prefer, remove family heirlooms or delicate collectibles from the rooms where you’ll be entertaining to avoid accidents and breakage.

Focus on Food

Finger foods and anything that can be prepared in advance are ideal for open-house fiestas. Don’t forget to refresh supplies as guests leave and new ones arrive. If the event is themed, carry out the motif in the food as well (a “red” party might include strawberries, apples and red pepper appetizers). Slightly more messy foods like dips or hot appetizers should be served in the kitchen and dining areas, along with beverages. Arrange to have portable foods available in other rooms of your house to encourage guests to spread out and maximize socialization possibilities.
