Stumbling Wildcats change look

Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 24 Arizona, off to its worst start in 22 years, is due to make some changes, starting with its offensive scheme.

Coach Lute Olson said the Wildcats (2-3) will shelve their four-perimeter-player attack in favor of a more conventional three outside shooters.

The Wildcats fell nine spots in the poll after a 69-65 loss at Houston last Saturday. This is the first time since 1983-84, Olson’s first season at Arizona, that his team has been less than .500 after five games.

“It is not time to start panicking, but we have to start playing our best and start playing like Arizona basketball,” center Kirk Walters said.

Olson used a three-perimeter, two-big man offense for years, but went to the perimeter look this season because of an abundance of wing players. The result has been 39 percent shooting.

“We are tweaking a number of things,” Olson said Tuesday. “The next five games for us will be very important as far as momentum before we get into the start of league play on the road.”
