No. 12 Sun Devils earn seventh straight win by beating Wildcats

Kristen Kovesdy had 13 points and eight rebounds, helping 12th-ranked Arizona State beat Arizona 83-59 Thursday in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams at Tucson, Ariz.

Jill Noe added 13 points, and Reagan Pariseau (Central Valley High) and Kate Engelbrecht each had 10 points for the Sun Devils (10-1), who won their seventh in a row.

Ashley Whisonant had 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and Linda Pace scored 10 as the Wildcats (4-6) lost their fourth straight.

(2) Duke 99, Colorado State 52: At Durham, N.C., freshman Abby Waner had 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and six assists to lead the Blue Devils (11-0) to a victory over the Rams. Melissa Dennett had 16 points and 10 assists for Colorado State (5-4).

(6) Maryland 70, George Mason 33: At Fairfax, Va., Ashleigh Newman scored 21 points, and the Terrapins’ defense held the Patriots (4-5) to 20 percent shooting in the win. Marissa Coleman added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins (10-1).

(7) Ohio State 90, Canisius 58: At Columbus, Ohio, Jessica Davenport had 29 points and 10 rebounds to help the Buckeyes past the Golden Griffins (6-6). Debbie Merrill added 19 points and five assists for the Buckeyes (8-1), who shot 48 percent from the field and forced 31 turnovers.

(8) Connecticut 86, Hofstra 49: At Hartford, Conn., Mel Thomas scored a career-high 25 points and Barbara Turner had 16 rebounds to lead the Huskies (9-1) to their ninth win in 10 games. Lana Harshaw led Hofstra with 12 points and Vanessa Gidden added 10 for the Pride (4-4).

(14) DePaul 78, Northwestern 58: At Evanston, Ill., Allie Quigley scored 22 points and Khara Smith had 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Blue Demons past the Wildcats. Caprice Smith added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Demons (12-1). Ifeoma Okonkwo led Northwestern (4-6) with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

(17) Minnesota 66, Iowa State 61: At Minneapolis, Liz Podominick scored 18 points and the Gophers squandered a 12-point halftime lead before rallying to beat the Cyclones (7-2). Shannon Schonrock and Jamie Broback each scored 12 points for the Gophers (7-2), who stopped the Cyclones’ six-game winning streak.

(19) Vanderbilt 70, La Salle 57: At Philadelphia, Nicole Jules scored a career-high 21 points, and Liz Sherwood added 16 to lead the Commodores (9-3) past the Explorers. Jenna Graber led La Salle (3-6) with 12 points.

(25) Temple 52, Villanova 43: At Philadelphia, Kamesha Hairston scored 14 points to lead the Owls past their Big 5 rival Wildcats (7-3). Candice Dupree scored nine points, well less than her 17.1 average, and finished with 10 rebounds, helping the Owls (8-2) outrebound Villanova 45-30 and outscore the Wildcats 36-12 in the paint.
