Fern wins Spokane City Championship

David Fern, playing out of Spokane C.C., won the Championship Flight of the Spokane City Championship at The Creek at Qualchan on Sunday. Fern shot a third-round 69 to leave him at 9-under 206 for the tournament.

The runner-up was Kevin Braegger, playing out of Esmeralda, who shot a 70 in round three and an overall score of 5-under 210. Kettle Falls’ Jason Azzarito finished third, shooting a 72 in the third round to finish at 2-under 213.

In the First Flight, Bob Witte out of Qualchan won at 13-over 228.

Chad Cherry of Prairie Falls and Ron Lollis out of Downriver tied for second, shooting 14-over 229.

In the Second Flight, Slade Zumhofe out of Qualchan finished at 27-over 242 to lead the field.

Tom Craig, also out of Qualchan, finished second with a 29-over 244. Rounding out the top three was another player out of Qualchan, Gordon Aden, who finished at 31-over 246.

In the Senior Division, Jerry Traynham out of Qualchan shot a third-round 71 to win with an overall score of 4-over 219.

In second place were Bob Clayton out of Sundance and Mike McNeilly out of Qualchan, who both shot an 11-over 226.

Soccer

Washington State played No. 25 Gonzaga to a scoreless tie after two overtime periods in a matchup at Pullman.

WSU’s Brynn Bemis had 3 saves, as did Gonzaga’s Jessie Thalman.

WSU had more opportunities, getting 11 shots, while Gonzaga had just five. Six of the WSU shots were taken by Kiersten Dallstream.

Both teams are now 1-0-1 after season-opening wins.

“Eastern Washington fell to Depaul 2-0 in Chicago, Ill.

The Eagles had just six shots on goal while the Blue Demons had 14.

Abby Jensen and Lillian Bourret both had two shots on goal for the eagles. Eastern’s goalkeeper, Tiera Como, was game, finishing with 12 saves.

But the Eagles were unable to convert on offense and fell to 0-2-0.

“Idaho dropped to 0-2-0 with a 4-0 loss to No. 15 Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif.

Idaho was outshot 26 to 1 and gave up one goal on a turnover in the box and another that was tipped off a defender.

Idaho’s only shot was taken by Jenny Springer. Vandal’s goalkeeper Michelle Jordan managed 6 saves.
