NHL returns after two-week Olympic break
Mats Sundin partied in Sweden with the rest of his Olympic teammates at a gold-medal celebration in Stockholm on Monday.
Today, Sundin has to go back to his real job as Toronto Maple Leafs captain. So do the rest of the NHL Olympians who played in Turin, Italy.
After a two-week break for the Winter Olympics, the regular season resumes tonight with six games: Montreal at the New York Islanders, Florida at Tampa Bay, Washington at Toronto, Minnesota at Colorado, Vancouver at Calgary and Detroit at San Jose.
Some teams will have their Olympians in the lineup, some won’t.
The Detroit Red Wings, who have a league-best 83 points, will be without their five Swedish players against San Jose.
Vancouver said it expects to have Sweden twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin available for its game in Calgary. Most players should be back for Wednesday’s games.
Injured Canucks replaced
The Vancouver Canucks recalled Tomas Mojzis and Sven Butenschon from Manitoba of the AHL on Monday.
Sami Salo and Mattias Ohlund, two of Vancouver’s top three defenders, were hurt at the Olympics in Turin, Italy, last week.
The Canucks are already without Ed Jovanovski, which means they will be missing their top three defensemen when their three-game road trip starts in Calgary tonight.
Mojzis has played five NHL games this season and Butenschon has 132 games of NHL experience.
Primeau out for season
Flyers captain Keith Primeau will sit out the rest of the regular season nearly four months after suffering another concussion, a person in the NHL with knowledge of the decision told the Associated Press on Monday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because Primeau was going to make an official announcement today.
