Fresh sheet: WSU offers organic produce, education
The Washington State University organic farm will welcome visitors Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Families may explore the three-acre organic farm located inside the Tukey Horticultural Orchard on Airport Road in Pullman. The farm offers a community supported agriculture program, and shareholders especially are invited to “see their farm,” said manager Brad Jaeckel, according to a news release. But anyone is welcome for a tour of the farm, snacks, and a presentation.
WSU announced this summer it will be the first university in the country to offer a major in organic agriculture systems. The college has been researching organics for more than 25 years, and it seemed a natural fit to offer the program, said John Reganold in a news release. It was Reganold who suggested the new major.
The WSU Organic Farm also serves as a training ground for those students.
To get to the farm from the Moscow-Pullman highway: Turn onto Airport Road. Continue past Grimes Way (and the bears) about 3/4 mile to the last driveway on the right, before the intersection to the airport. Turn right into driveway with big red sign, “Tukey Horticultural Orchard.” Go through gate and past shop buildings. Follow paved road uphill through orchard. At the top of hill, turn right at the gray shed and go about 200 yards. Parking is available next to the raspberries and a limited amount of parking is available across the road from the farm next to the orchard. Jaeckel asks that visitors drive carefully and very slowly, and not bring any pets.
