Chiefs select Czech

The Spokane Chiefs selected Ondrej Roman from the Czech Republic with the fifth overall selection in Wednesday’s Canadian Hockey League import draft.

The 17-year-old is eligible for the 2007 NHL entry draft.

In 47 games last year, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound center led his team, HC Vitkovice, in scoring with 17 goals, 27 assists and 44 points while finishing the season with a +17 with the team.

Roman has also represented the Czech Republic in international tournaments on Under-17 and Under-18 teams.

Baseball

The Spokane RiverHawks put together 14 hits in a 12-4 victory over the Kitsap BlueJackets in a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League game at Avista Stadium to remain in first place.

Cale Ort (1-0) spotted Kitsap three runs in the first but went on to pitch five innings, giving up four runs, five hits, three walks and striking out two.

Chris Bozo hit a two-run double in the first, Greg Biagi had an RBI single and Paul Martin a sacrifice fly in the second, and Shawn Gizynski and Brian Yardley RBI singles in the third.

Bozo had three hits to go with his two RBIs, while Brent Mertens stroked four hits.
