Colonials slip past 49ers, run win streak to 18

Carl Elliot’s basket at the buzzer helped No. 7 George Washington complete its first perfect Atlantic 10 season with an 86-85 overtime victory over the Charlotte 49ers (18-11, 11-5) on Saturday in Washington.

Elliot caught Noel Wilmore’s 3-point air ball in traffic in the paint and lofted the ball into the basket at the buzzer, extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 18 games. The Colonials (26-1, 16-0) matched Temple in 1983-84 and 1987-88 and Saint Joseph’s in 2003-04 as teams with a perfect conference slate.

(2) Connecticut 84, Louisville 80: Marcus Williams went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final 48 seconds and the Huskies (27-2, 14-2) clinched at least a share of the Big East regular-season championship with a victory over the Cardinals (18-11, 6-10) in Storrs, Conn.

(3) Memphis 69, Houston 62: Rodney Carney scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Tigers (27-3, 13-1 Conference USA) over the Cougars (19-8, 9-5) in Memphis, Tenn.

(10) Illinois 75, (25) Michigan State 68: Dee Brown scored 16 of his 20 points after halftime and made two 3-pointers during a 12-0 run in the second half to lift the Illini (25-5, 11-5 Big Ten) to a victory over the Spartans (20-10, 8-8) in East Lansing, Mich.

(11) Tennessee 68, Vanderbilt 59: Chris Lofton scored 21 points to help the Volunteers (21-6, 12-4 Southeastern Conference) erase a 16-point second-half deficit and beat the Commodores (16-11, 7-9) in Nashville, Tenn.

(12) Boston College 59, Virginia Tech 57: Jared Dudley had 16 points and nine rebounds and Craig Smith scored 12 to help the Eagles (24-6, 11-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) hold off the Hokies (14-15, 4-12) in Boston.

Cincinnati 78, (16) West Virginia 75: Eric Hicks scored 18 points and Devan Downey hit two free throws with 1.3 seconds left to lift the Bearcats (19-11, 8-8 Big East) over the Mountaineers (20-9, 11-5) in Cincinnati.

(18) Kansas 66, Kansas State 52: Brandon Rush tied a career high with 24 points, and the Jayhawks (22-7, 13-3) beat the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kan., to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 title.

South Florida 63, (20) Georgetown 56: Solomon Jones scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and the Bulls (7-22, 1-15 Big East) stopped a school-record 17-game losing streak by closing their season with a win over the Hoyas (19-8, 10-6) in Tampa, Fla.

(21) LSU 55, Mississippi 52: Glen Davis scored 15 points, including five free throws down the stretch, to help the Tigers (22-7, 14-3 SEC) beat the Rebels (14-15, 4-12) in Baton Rouge, La.

Wake Forest 76, (22) N.C. State 63: Eric Williams had 22 points and 16 rebounds to help the Demon Deacons (15-15, 3-13) upset the Wolfpack (21-8, 10-6) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

(23) Iowa 59, Wisconsin 49: Jeff Horner scored 22 points, Adam Haluska added 16 and the Hawkeyes (22-8, 11-5 Big Ten) beat the Badgers (19-10, 9-7) in Iowa City, Iowa, completing their first undefeated home schedule since 1965-66.

NCAA tourney qualifiers

Belmont 74, Lipscomb 69 (OT): Justin Hare scored 10 of his career-high 32 points in overtime to help the Bruins (20-10) earn their first NCAA tournament bid with a 74-69 victory over the Bisons (21-10) in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship game in Johnson City, Tenn. … Winthrop 51, Coastal Carolina 50: Craig Bradshaw buried a soft hook shot with 9.1 seconds left to help the Eagles (23-7) beat the Chanticleers (20-10) in the Big South Conference title game in Rock Hill, S.C. … Murray State 74, Samford 57: Trey Pearson scored 15 and Shawn Witherspoon grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Racers (24-6) past the Bulldogs (20-11) in Nashville, Tenn., for the Ohio Valley Conference title.
