This is how good Steve Hutchinson was for Seattle: Mention the Pro Bowl left guard to Shaun Alexander, and he references Jerry Rice.

“It’s business,” the 2005 league MVP said of Hutchinson’s bitterly contested escape as a free agent to Minnesota before last season, a move that is still reverberating across Seattle’s scuffling offensive line.

“Every player on this team that goes … I’m like, ‘Oh, no. Jerry Rice is gone.’ ” Alexander said, recalling perhaps the receiver’s brief fling in Seattle in 2004.

So of Hutchinson, Alexander simply said, “He’s on another team now.”

Hutchinson returns again today when the Seahawks host the Vikings in the third preseason game. Both teams’ starters will play into the second half in their final extensive rehearsal before the regular season begins Sept. 9.

Seattle won’t exactly be welcoming back Hutchinson. Longing for him, perhaps.

The Seahawks’ first-round pick in 2001 returned last October. While Minnesota won 31-13 and knocked out quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for a month, Seattle fans booed their formerly beloved guard.

And 17 months after Hutchinson bolted for a tricky unprecedented contract, the Seahawks are still feeling the sting.

They are on their third left guard since Hutchinson left. Rob Sims, a fourth-round draft choice in 2006, is starting now, after the failed trials of center Chris Spencer and oft-injured Floyd Womack.

By now, many Seahawks are tired of hearing that Hutchinson’s departure has caused every one of their problems. The left guard doesn’t want to discuss it, either.

“I’m not talking about Seattle,” Hutchinson said Thursday at Vikings training camp in Eden Prairie, Minn., before walking away.

Receiver arrested

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver David Boston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after police found him passed out behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle in Pinellas Park, Fla.

Reid’s son in more trouble

Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid’s son was jailed for violating his bail after police said they found 33 pills, including the painkiller hydrocodone, on him in Norristown, Pa.

Britt Reid, 22, was stopped Thursday on suspicion of driving while impaired. Free on bail at the time, he’s awaiting sentencing for a January road-rage incident in which police say he brandished a gun at another driver.

Bills extend Schobel

Defensive end Aaron Schobel reached a contract extension with the Bills, a reward for Buffalo’s top pass-rusher coming off his first Pro Bowl season. Terms of the deal were not revealed.
