Look for other heroes

The Spokesman-Review

I’m glad to see Barry Bonds has a fan in Wilbur. Let’s hope it’s the only one. While Mr. Miller states in his (Aug. 19) letter, “They have had 21 seasons to prove him wrong,” I don’t believe anyone has ever said that Barry Bonds has been cheating for his entire baseball career. It merely takes one look at the dramatic change in Bonds in the last few years, both in physical appearance and statistics, to know he didn’t get that far all on his own. And I do agree that Bonds has set a standard for the next millennium and that he has paved a golden path to stardom for them. Unfortunately, it’s not the standard most of us want for ourselves or our children and that golden path is merely gold-plated and it will tarnish in due time. While I am not a fan of Alex Rodriguez, he and Ken Griffey Jr. are much closer to the true meaning of the word “hero” in baseball than Bonds can ever hope to be for those of us clever enough to want to see the truth.
