PARENTAL GUIDANCE

Excerpts from discussions on the Parents Council blog this week:

Last-minute cancellations: I haven’t run into this lately but about four years ago we had a huge number of no-shows for our son’s fourth birthday. We invited many people and rented out two of the party/swim rooms at the YMCA in the Valley. I think maybe six kids showed up. Most parents didn’t even call. One parent had their 4-year-old child call to say he wasn’t coming and he left a scream message on our answering machine. What really bothered me was that it was for my son’s birthday. However, he was so young that I don’t think he noticed. I don’t think of the no-shows as bad people, just insensitive. – Posted by Rachel

Shopping carts: OK, so you know those shopping carts … most grocery stores have some variation of them where two kids can ride in the seat/car, plus you still have the basket for a baby to sit in. Here is my problem: I have three toddlers, so those carts are actually necessary for me to go grocery shopping, or else I get to drag two carts through the store, one full of kids and another just for groceries. Whenever they all seem to be in use, I see them used by a parent with only one child (who could just sit in a normal cart) or by two kids who are old enough to walk (over 7) and usually give up sitting in the cart halfway through the store anyway. So here I am dragging two carts (not an easy task) and wondering why people do that. – Posted by Mikayla
