Locals fare well in tennis championships
Spokane was well represented at the United States Tennis Association Junior Sectional Championships held Aug. 23-26 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore.
William Hough, 12, of Spokane, and the girls doubles duo of Mead senior Katrina Schwab and Ferris senior Katie Griffith made it all the way to the semifinals before being eliminated.
Hough won all four of his matches before falling 6-2, 7-5 to Zack Elliott of Mercer Island, Wash.
Schwab and Griffith saw their championship hopes end after losing to eventual champions Jacqueline Cako and Sabine Fuchs 8-1 in 18-year-old girls doubles.
Spokane’s Audrionna Farr and Megan Moore also made it to the semifinals, where they lost 8-6 to Lea Jansen and Christy Sipes in the 16-year-old girls doubles division.
Baseball
For the second year in a row, West Valley senior Bryan Peterson was named to the Pacific Northwest Championship All-Tournament Team.
Joining Peterson from the 2008 class was University’s Danny Jordan and Lake City’s Kellon Huffman.
Four players from the 2009 class were all-tournament team selections including Rogers’ Jacob Partridge, Priest River’s Brian Nelson and Mt. Spokane’s Tyler Jackson and Nic Fowler.
Central Valley’s Cory Mack and Lewis and Clark’s Sage Poland were 2010 selections and Shadle Park’s Kasey Sargent and Gonzaga Prep’s Kevin George were named to the class of 2011 team.
Basketball
Twelve members of the Riverside High School basketball team recently returned home from a three-week tour of Germany.
The team played six games in Meppen, Nordhorn, Osnabruck and Leipzig, where they also held clinics for the players of those teams.
Riverside went 5-1, losing only to a college team from Leipzig.
Team roster: Jayke Bond, Max Bond, Derek Martin, Dustin Martin, Dustin Payne, Jake Saxon, Brian Scott, Cody Stumph, Josh Nyberg, Levi McPhee, Brett Thompson and Austin Miller.
The team was coached by Brent Monroe, Mark Vannatter and Allen Martin.
Inline skating
Post Falls’ Xion and Zephaneah Akana skated successfully at the St. Paul Inline Marathon held Aug. 19 in St. Paul, Minn.
Xion, 17, was the top skater in the Advanced Women Division, finishing the 26.2-mile race in 1 hour, 33 minutes and 28.7 seconds. Zephaneah, 14, was fifth with a time of 1:33:39.5.
Xion and Zephaneah are members of Team X and train on the Centennial Trail.
