Fresh Sheet: Striving to sell Grade-A produce

Farm-fresh produce is for sale on the Washington State University campus.

The WSU Sustainability Club, in partnership with the school’s organic farm, is selling produce from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday through Nov. 14 on the Terrell Mall across from Holland Library.

The farm stand will have a variety of organic fruits and vegetables available, including potatoes, salad greens, tomatoes, strawberries, herbs and peaches from the Tukey Orchard.

Money raised by the mini-market will benefit both the WSU Sustainability Club and the WSU Organic Farm.

According to a news release, the sustainability club hopes the university will establish an office to coordinate and fund activities that encourage sustainability, and the group is circulating a petition to urge WSU president Elson Floyd to do so. Club officer Steve Bramwell says in the news release that they define sustainability as activity “that provides an income and a good quality of life without compromising future peoples and ecosystems.”

WSU is the first college in the country to offer an undergraduate degree in organic agriculture.

Feast tickets on sale

In other WSU food news, tickets to the popular Feast of the Arts dinners are selling out fast.

Friday nights before each home football game, the university hosts dinners to showcase fine dining, wine, music and art.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception at the WSU Museum of Art and music by the School of Music and Theatre Arts and the WSU Cougar marching band.

That is followed at 7 by a four-course dinner prepared by chefs and students from the School of Hospitality Business Management served in the Todd Hall Dining Room.

The meal is paired with wines from a Washington winery, and the vintner, grape grower or owner will be there to discuss the selection.

Tickets to the dinner are $65 per person and early reservations are recommended.

Dinners on Sept. 14 and Nov. 9 are sold out. There are tickets available for Oct. 5 and 26 and Nov. 16.

More details about each dinner, including the menu and featured winery, can be found online at www.feast.wsu.edu.

Reservations can be made online or by calling (509) 335-4737 or (877) 978-3868.
