Yankees 5, Red Sox 3: At New York, Johnny Damon hit a tiebreaking home run against his former team and Andy Pettitte won his sixth straight start to lead the Yankees over Boston. Derek Jeter also homered and Jorge Posada hit an RBI double for the Yankees, who took the opener of a three-game series in the first meeting between the rivals since June 3.
Indians 6, Twins 5: At Cleveland, Jake Westbrook got his fourth win of August, rookie Asdrubal Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run and the Indians kept a tight grip on the Central Division lead with a win over Minnesota. Jason Tyner had four hits for the Twins, who fell 7 1/2 games behind Cleveland.
Royals 6, Tigers 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Brian Bannister won for the sixth time in seven decisions, Alex Gordon hit a three-run double and the Royals beat Detroit. Magglio Ordonez went 4 for 5 for the Tigers and is hitting .404 in August.
Rangers 4, White Sox 3: At Arlington, Texas, Marlon Byrd hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and Ian Kinsler and Gerald Laird homered as the Rangers topped Chicago. Jim Thome homered for the White Sox to move within six of becoming the 23rd player in the 500 club.
Blue Jays 5, Athletics 4: At Oakland, Calif., Matt Stairs homered and Lyle Overbay hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning to lift Toronto to a win over the Athletics. Jack Cust drove in two for the A’s, who lost their fifth straight.
Devil Rays 15, Orioles 8: At Baltimore, Tampa Bay pushed across 11 runs in the eighth inning and the Orioles wasted six home runs in suffering their seventh straight loss.
