In brief: GU seeks extension of pedestrian area

The Spokesman-Review

A public hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 1 on a proposal by Gonzaga University to extend its pedestrian mall westward along Boone Avenue and adjoining streets.

The Spokane City Council approved a resolution Monday setting the hearing during its regular legislative session, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Gonzaga has proposed the $1 million project to improve the existing pedestrian mall on the north side of the Administration Building and to extend it westward to accommodate increasing campus uses there.

In addition to the expanded mall, the university is planning to install a reflecting pool and 9-foot bronze statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. The statue by George Carlson, of Hamilton, Mont., is being placed so that the archway entry to the administration building will outline the statue when seen from the main walkway on the north entrance to the campus. The existing mall was opened in 1981.

The current request to the city includes vacating the following portions of public streets and an alley.

“Boone Avenue from the east line of Pearl Street to the west line of Astor Street.

“Astor Street from the south line of Boone to the north line of vacated Desmet Avenue.

“Van Gorp Place from the south line of Boone to the north line of vacated Desmet.

“Desmet from the east line of Pearl to the east line of Van Gorp.

“The alley between Boone and vacated Desmet from Van Gorp to Astor.
